I am a 17-year-old musician named Daniella Martinez Osete, and I want to share my journey of discovering my musical identity and how it has helped me feel more confident and peaceful. I attend Nogales High School, where I’ve discovered the incredible power of music to express myself, grow personally, and find pure happiness.

From the moment I played my first note on the saxophone, I knew there was something extraordinary about this instrument. It wasn’t just a tool; it was a gateway to new worlds, a channel for emotions, and a medium for my imagination.

But like any artist, my journey wasn’t a solo endeavor. I’ve been influenced by early mentors and experiences that have shaped me into the captivating performer I am today. I was introduced to piano music when I was 6 years old, when I took several years of classes with Mrs. Fields in Nogales Arizona. I have such great memories with her. She is a lovely woman!

Today, I play Alto Sax for the Tucson Jazz Institute in Tucson and Alto Sax, Soprano Sax and Flute at The Nogales High School Apache Jazz Band. Tony Belletti, the conductor of the Nogales High School Apache Jazz Band, introduced me to various genres of music and played a significant role in nurturing my musical identity.

Being part of the band has provided fertile ground for me to explore my talent and develop my own unique voice and style as a jazz artist. It’s an environment where I can grow not just as a musician but also as an individual.

Discovering a Musical Identity Through Nurturing Guidance

Under the guidance of Brice Winston, I found myself stepping into a whole new world. Each practice session and performance allowed me to grow both as a musician and as an individual. Mr. Winston encourages us to delve deep into the realms of jazz, introducing us to legends like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Their music became my inspiration, helping me develop my own distinct musical voice on the saxophone.

Listening to Charlie Parker’s intricate melodies or John Coltrane’s soulful improvisations felt like learning a new language. Their music opened up new possibilities for me and allowed me to explore different sounds and rhythms, shaping my unique style as a young jazz musician.

Through nurturing guidance during my formative years at Nogales High School Apache Jazz Band, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery through music that continues to this day.

The Dual Role of Practice and Creative Exploration

To master my technique, I spend hours practicing the saxophone every day. But it’s not just about scales and repetition; it’s about pushing boundaries and discovering new ways to express emotions through music. I also find inspiration by transcribing solos from jazz greats like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. This process not only helps me improve my technique but also fuels my creativity as I weave my own  tales with musical stories using notes and rhythms.

When it comes to composing music, I embrace full artistic freedom. After assembling my saxophone, I like to sit on my bed, place my music stand by me with blank music paper and my tablet and phone. I start warming up with scales and transition to playing tunes and if I like it I start composing and writing my solos. If I feel good about a composition, I may take videos or come out of my room and ask my parents to listen to what I’ve written.

In my music, I lay bare my thoughts and feelings, crafting compositions that resonate with my personal journey. Each original piece becomes a snapshot of life, capturing moments of joy, sorrow, and everything in between through the language of jazz.

Through disciplined practice and boundless creative exploration, my musical voice grows stronger each day. I step confidently into the realm of original composition, using melody and harmony to share my inner world with listeners.

Music as a Source of Confidence and Resilience

Engaging with music during my teenage years has been transformative. It’s not just about hitting the right notes or keeping the rhythm; it’s a journey that has shaped my identity and boosted my self-assurance. My saxophone is more than an instrument – it’s my partner in building confidence through music.

Musical art can also help us when we are young by fostering discipline and providing a creative outlet for expression. The discipline required to practice an instrument regularly translates into perseverance and determination in other areas of life. Music also provides a safe space for young people to express ourselves without judgment, conveying our thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

Performing can be nerve-wracking, but overcoming these challenges has made me more resilient. Each successful performance builds upon the last, reinforcing my self-esteem. Even when things don’t go as planned during a performance, learning to adapt and continue shows resilience.

The Impact of Music on Personal Growth

My experience showcases how deeply art affects personal growth by nurturing emotional well-being along with technical skills. Confidence through music isn’t just about performance; it’s about discovering oneself and finding harmony within. Music has empowered me as an individual, allowing me to express myself and embark on a journey of self-discovery.

Playing the saxophone can turn a bad day around or help me process complex emotions. It diverts my attention from negative thoughts and overwhelming situations, allowing me to immerse myself in the music.

Getting lost in the harmonies and rhythms of music is like having a heart-to-heart conversation with every note. Music connects me with my emotions, allowing me to express my innermost thoughts and feelings nonverbally. It helps me understand and process complex emotions that may be difficult to put into words.

Embracing Opportunities for Musical Growth and Collaboration

Formal music education lays the groundwork for young artists like me, providing essential tools to navigate the complex world of music. In addition to my studies at Nogales High School, I’ve pursued personal studies in music theory to free my creativity on the saxophone.

The practical knowledge gained from these studies is vital. It allows me to have spontaneous musical conversations on stage, where scales become sentences and chords turn into expressive gestures. I’ve found a home in the Morley Arts District, where I engage with the local music community and venues, weaving my own notes into the tapestry of melodies around me.

Live performances in the Morley Arts District become testing grounds for new ideas. I take risks on stage, experimenting with different techniques and approaches to my music. These performances push my boundaries and challenge me to think outside the box, leading to fresh discoveries and growth as an artist.

Through these experiences, I not only hone my craft but also build lasting connections with fellow musicians who share my passion and dedication to growth.

The Borderless Language of Music: Navigating Cultural Influences

Just as jazz embodies a fusion of diverse cultural influences, my saxophone reverberates with the rhythmic heartbeat of my own heritage. Music is a universal language that leaps across geographical boundaries. Growing up close to the US-Mexico border has undeniably influenced my musical journey. My music becomes a conversation where different cultures speak and listen to each other. Latin rhythms blend seamlessly with jazz improvisation in my performances, creating a unique sound that defines my musical identity.

This intertwining of cultures is what makes music such a potent form of expression. It allows young artists like me to explore our roots while embracing new influences, creating a musical tapestry that is both universal and deeply personal.

Looking Towards the Future: Aspirations and Impact/ Exploring the Benefits of Engaging in the Arts

My journey as a youth musician is a testament to music’s enduring power. It shows how passion, hard work, and a supportive community can inspire someone to strive to be a remarkable artist. By attending local concerts and advocating for robust music education programs in schools, music lovers can provide young talents like me with opportunities to perform, improve, and gain confidence. These programs serve as important platforms for young talents to discover.

Embrace the chance for transformative experiences that await you in your artistic endeavors. Whether through the soulful tunes of a saxophone or any medium that sparks your passion, I hope you embark on this journey and let creativity lead you towards self-discovery and empowerment.

Consider how engaging in the arts can propel your personal growth:
